Plastic

Plastic zakjes, om eten in te bewaren of om de inhoud van je koffer mee te beschermen, door je douchefris erin te doen, bijvoorbeeld... Zo vanzelfsprekend, maar zo schaars in Kenia. En dat heeft een hele goede reden; de vervuiling van de zee en aarde door het plastic afval. Er zijn gelukkig vervangers, gemaakt van biologisch afbreekbare stof. Werkt net zo goed voor je boodschappen, maar het is niet lucht- en waterdicht. Soms is dat best lastig.
En de afbreekbare afvalzakken zijn meestal uitverkocht, dus als ze wel weer een voorraadje hebben in de winkel, dan zijn we uitzinnig blij en kopen gelijk een heleboel pakken. Om pas daarna je lokale contacten te informeren over de nieuwe vooraad ;)
Maar na anderhalve maand in Kenia went het wel. Ik ben wel uiterst zuinig op alles wat op een zakje lijkt; broodzakken, papieren zakken waar je kleine boodschapjes in krijgt en ook op de tasjes die we in de supermarkt krijgen. Zo handig voor bijvoorbeeld de vieze sportschoenen in de tassen van de kinderen...
Soms is het wel krom, zo kochten we een grootverpakking WC-papier en bij thuiskomst ontdekten we dat elke rol apart is ingepakt...in plastic! De waterflessen die we eerst kochten zijn voor eenmalig gebruik, ook jammer. Maar de grotere waterflessen zijn hervulbaar, je betaald er statiegeld voor. Prima!
We doen ons best met recycling, iets wat ze hier duidelijk nog niet gewend zijn. Maar een betere wereld begint bij je zelf...

Plastic bags, to keep food in or to protect your luggage with putting the douche gel in a plastic bag. It's so easy to use plastic bags... But they're hard to get in Kenya. With a very good reason! Plastic pollution in the sea. Luckily there are good replacements, bags made from biodegradable fabric. Just as good for our groceries, but it's not airtight or waterproof. Sometimes that's not so easy...
The biodegradable garbage bags are often sold out, so we are delighted when we find them in the store and buy a lot of them while we can. And just after buying we contact our local friends to inform them about the new stock  ;)
After one and a half month in Kenya we're getting used to it. I keep all the bags of every kind very carefully. So we have a bag for the kids' dirty sport shoes for example.
The plastic ban can sometimes be confusing. Not every kind of plastic can be banned at once, I understand. But to buy a BIG packet of toilet rolls and to find out that every single roll is wrapped in plastic, is kind of ridiculous. The water bottles we bought at first, were to be used only once. Too bad.. So now we buy water in the bigger bottles, which they refill. Yes, I like!
We are trying our best with recycling, although we notice that people around us aren't used to recycling. But a better world starts with yourself!
